"Custom golf cart upgrades in Austin, TX, including lift kits, wheels, Bluetooth audio, LED lighting, and street-legal packages. Built by our team."

Not every buyer wants a stock cart off the lot. Many Austin area customers will work with premier golf cart specialists to develop a vehicle that fits their neighborhood, terrain, family and everyday activities. A team of expert golf cart builders can help personalize a build to suit individual preferences, making each cart more functional and fun to use. The upgrades chosen for a custom build are often different depending on lifestyle, performance demands, and personal flair.

We have been making personalized carts right here in Austin at Golf Carts of ATX since 2020. We have new electric and gas versions from Kandi, Coleman Powersports, Dach Apollo and Edge Vortex. The first step of any project is getting the correct base model, before anything is customized. Here are some of the most requested upgrades among Austin purchasers, how they work, and things to consider before adding them to your custom build:

Lift Kits: Raising the Ride for Terrain and Style

Lift kits are the most requested structural upgrade we install. They raise the cart's suspension by 3 to 6 inches, adding ground clearance for rough terrain and making room for larger tires. The result is a higher ride height that changes both the look and the capability of the cart.

For buyers dealing with uneven terrain, gravel paths, or Hill Country neighborhoods with elevation changes, a lift kit is a functional decision. It keeps the undercarriage from making contact with the ground on rough surfaces and allows the cart to handle conditions that would challenge a stock setup.

Lift height needs to match tire size. A larger lift typically requires a larger tire to fill out the wheel well correctly, which is why lift kits and tire upgrades are almost always selected together. We confirm the right combination for each cart model before anything is ordered.

Tire and Wheel Upgrades: Matching Form and Function

The right tire and wheel combination changes both how a cart handles and how it looks. Larger all-terrain tires add traction and clearance off paved surfaces. Custom wheels shift the overall appearance significantly, and most buyers have clear preferences once they see the options side by side.

We offer a tire and wheel builder that lets buyers match tires and wheels to their cart model and lift height before committing. Getting the sizing right matters, especially when pairing with a lift kit, and compatibility varies by brand and model. Our team confirms the correct fit before any part is ordered to avoid mismatches on delivery.

The combination of a lift kit and a quality tire and wheel package is the most popular structural pairing in our custom builds. It is the change buyers notice most from the street.

Bluetooth Audio Systems: Built for the Outdoors

Audio upgrades are among the most popular add-ons, particularly for neighborhood cruisers, recreational riders, and buyers who use their cart for events or backyard gatherings. A properly installed system in a golf cart uses amplified speakers mounted in the cart body and a head unit that connects to any phone via Bluetooth.

The key word is "properly installed." Bolt-on aftermarket hardware rattles loose quickly and underperforms in the heat and vibration that come with regular cart use. Every audio install our team does is wired correctly into the cart's electrical system, with speaker placement chosen based on the cart's body type and seat configuration.

A 6-seat cart benefits from different speaker positioning than a 2-seat model, and we account for that during the install. Audio upgrades are part of the custom build process for new carts and are also available as standalone installs through our mobile repair service for buyers who already own a cart.

Street-Legal Light Packages: Required for Road Use, Useful Beyond It

For buyers who want to register their cart for use on Austin-area public roads, a full street-legal light package is a requirement. The package includes headlights, taillights, turn signals, and side mirrors. In Texas, a cart with a VIN and this safety equipment can be registered at the DMV for $20 and driven on roads posted at 35 mph or under. All carts we sell come with a VIN included.

The light package can be added during the initial build or installed after delivery. For buyers who do not plan to drive on public roads, it is still a practical upgrade. Evening riding in neighborhoods and HOA communities with multiple carts out after dark is significantly safer with front and rear lighting.

For existing cart owners who want to add street-legal equipment to a cart they already own, our mobile technicians can handle the full installation at your location.

Custom Colors and Aesthetic Upgrades

Beyond mechanical and functional upgrades, a number of Austin buyers customize the appearance of their cart through paint choices, two-tone seat configurations, and custom trim. These options vary by brand and model.

We carry brand-specific accessories for Kandi, Coleman Powersports, Dach Apollo, and Edge Vortex. Options differ across each brand, and compatibility is always confirmed before an accessory order is placed. Buyers with Kandi 4P or 6P models can browse available accessories here. Aesthetic upgrades are often chosen alongside functional ones, and the two do not have to conflict.

A well-chosen color and seat combination on top of a solid lift and wheel package makes for a cart that is distinctly yours rather than one that looks like every other cart in the neighborhood.

Battery Upgrades as Part of the Build

Battery choice is one of the most consequential decisions in any custom build because it affects upfront cost, ongoing maintenance, range, and how long the cart stays useful before needing a replacement. We offer three options: traditional lead-acid, AGM (sealed lead-acid, no maintenance), and lithium (LiFePO4).

Lead-acid batteries start at $191 per battery and require monthly water checks. Lithium kits range from $2,162 to $3,765, are completely maintenance-free, and carry a 10-year warranty through our ECO battery program. AGM falls between the two: sealed, maintenance-free, and priced below lithium.

For most buyers doing a full custom build, lithium is the natural choice. The higher upfront cost is offset by the longer lifespan and zero maintenance requirements over the life of the cart. Our battery upgrade page covers the full breakdown of options, pricing, and what to expect from each type.

How to Start Your Custom Build in Austin

New cart buyers can add any combination of these upgrades during the build process before delivery. The cart arrives at your door fully assembled with every upgrade installed and tested. No setup required on your end.

Every cart we sell includes a 3-year bumper-to-bumper warranty covering parts, labor, and transport. Financing is available with a soft credit pull, meaning applying does not affect your credit score.

For buyers who already own a cart and want upgrades installed, our mobile service team travels to your location across the Austin metro, including Georgetown, Round Rock, Dripping Springs, Lakeway, Pflugerville, Cedar Park, and San Marcos. The trip charge is $75 and labor is $149 per hour with a one-hour minimum.
